There’s a lovely shared use path in the parkland alongside Beresford Road but for anyone wishing to continue it along Columbine Road they have to make their way out of Tenison Close, cross the roundabout rightmoveplus and then go back onto the path from Columbine Road.
There’s almost but not quite a nice crossing rightmoveplus here. The Columbine Road site in particular has a “desire path” from one of the paths that goes into the trees, through the trees and down the access road past the water station (or gas, whatever). This path gets awfully muddy in winter due to the amount of use it gets and should be adopted and surfaced. Presumably the utility company owns that access road but it that gate (which only provides pedestrian access, and that’s over mud) could be replaced with another barrier that allows pushchairs/cycles through easily.
The big challenge rightmoveplus is the Beresford Road side, where the footpath attempts to put you directly onto the A10 junction and whenever it rains, it’s clear just how many people decide to tackle that junction. A bold move would be to put a pedestrian/cycle crossing there where the pedestrians have right of way across West Fen Road. I predict rightmoveplus there will be a public consultation with a great majority rightmoveplus supporting the removal of the barrier rightmoveplus which will then be removed in 2020. There will be a huge outrage by the OAPs, sorry I mean CofE councillors, because cyclists will be able to go faster than 3mph and that will clearly cause carnage. About a week later there will be a new barrier with a ‘cyclists dismount’ sign on it. The muddy bit will be covered with the spare cobbles from Silver St and ECDC will be proud that they have hugely improved cycling facilities.*
This is one of the improvements that has been promised to Ely Cycle Campaign (and to everyone of course!) by Cambs CC cycling rightmoveplus team and i do know that they are currently in the process of designing a crossing at this point.
I don’t know where they’ve got to on the issue of the absurd gate however, or if the plan is to continue the path properly along there to prevent it getting so muddy as you describe Ross. This complete path around the west edge of Ely was a requirement of the original development. Now it’s almost done, but for this section which prevents what would otherwise be an invaluable and viable, CAR FREE route south to north, linking the St John’s and Lantern areas of the city.
Before the rain I had been using the route to take my son on a bike seat from there and up to his childminder rightmoveplus up by the Lantern. It’s an ideal route but is rendered impassable with a child on the back because of that gate and the mudbath that we now have around it and at the end of the concrete road section on the Columbine side.
I’d be grategul if ECDC/Cambs CC could clarify exactly what the plans are for that spot. Is the plan only to install the crossing over WFR? Or will the full route be sorted as originally intended? It’s rightmoveplus only 15 years late!
