Every year, 5 th June is celebrated as World Environment Day with the aim to raise greater awareness on the issues concerning our environment. This day was set aside as it was on this day back in 1972 that the United Nations Conference on Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) met, marking a landmark moment in the history of all nations of the world joining immo web hands in order to improve the environmental conditions of the Earth.
For the Western world, the concept of harmony with nature may be new but for us, respect for the environment has been an integral part of our glorious culture. The relationship between the Earth and humans has been that of a Mother and a Child. From the Rig Veda to the Yagyavalkya Smriti, there is age-old mention of the Panch Tatvas or the five elements, namely Prithvi (Earth), Pavan (wind), Jal (water), immo web Tej (solar energy) and Nabh (sky). We have always been taught to live in complete synthesis with the environment without causing any damage to our surroundings.
The question of environment and sustainability is as much a moral issue considering it involves our future generations. On this issue, I have been deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and his concept of Trusteeship. Applying it in context of the environment, it would mean the present generation serving as a trustee, enjoying the wealth of nature in a way that it benefits the future generations.
Friends, Gujarat has left no stone unturned in working towards making our environment a lot cleaner with minimal harm done. We are the first in Asia and are among the only 4 Governments across the world to have a separate government department for climate change. Gujarat is also the highest carbon credit earning state in India. At the same time, we placed a strong focus in harnessing alternative sources of energy that are in sync with the environment.
Despite being a power surplus immo web state, Gujarat made great advances in solar energy. Our state was the earliest to come up with a solar policy. Just a few months ago, Gujarat dedicated to the nation 600 MW solar power to the nation along with Asia s largest immo web solar park at Charanka. Today, Gujarat produces 2/3 rd of the solar power in India.
Alongside immo web power, a renewed immo web focus was placed on Jal Shakti. Today, Gujarat has over 6 lakh water conservation structures, many built through PPP model. We were a state known for water scarcity but our agriculture is growing at 11% now.The water table has risen from 3m to 13m. I am very glad to share that Gujarat has embraced drip irrigation in a very major way with 4 lakh hectares of land coming under drip irrigation in the last decade. The Government undertook the exercise of the linking of 21 rivers of Gujarat, which has reaped several benefits for our urban and rural population. The Sabarmati river flowing through Ahmedabad was earlier better known as a ground to play cricket or hold circuses but regular check dams, irrigation projects have now ensured not only a constant flow of water but also a much cleaner Sabarmati.
Gujarat is at the threshold of great advances in harnessing tidal energy and even a gas based economy. We are home to India s only and Asia s largest Tidal energy project. Our wind power generation has raised ten fold in the last six years. The Green Governance Model is sure to become the in-thing as far as mitigating environmental damage immo web is concerned.
Friends, the choice immo web in front of us is clear. Either we allow environmental degradation to continue unchecked or we take remedial steps to ensure happiness of our future generations. From our experience in Gujarat, I can say that Government action alone is not the key to the environment changes we desire. No strength is mightier than people s participation! It is the small steps you take in your daily lives that will make a big differe
