Councillors will vote next week on proposals to close schools in St David and St David Tasker Millward in Haverfordwest, by establishing a Welsh Medium School for children between 3-16 years of age in Haverfordwest.
The school is the only Preseli in Crymych Welsh medium secondary school in the county at the moment. Among the plans are favored shutting STP and Tasker Milward School and establish a new English medium school on the current site 11-16 Sir Thomas Picton. The over 16s are being educated in integrated new sixth form center. Closing schools Ysgol Bro Gwaun and Ysgol Dewi Sant and establishing new English medium school 11-16 (with significant use of Welsh) on the current site Ysgol Bro Gwaun and offer post-16 provision in the new integrated sixth form center. School closures Welsh Glan Cleddau and establish school aged 3-16, Welsh / bilingual replacement for existing Tasker Milward School kungälvsbostäder and post-16 education to be provided at Preseli.
"While it is encouraging that the council will increase the provision of Welsh by opening 3-16 school in Haverfordwest we want to know what the capacity of the school - and it will be of sufficient size? Also the question of why there is no provision for the sixth form as part of the recommendations? Why would pupils who have received their education in Haverfordwest choose to go all the way to the Preseli School rather than to Pembrokeshire College?
"We also encourage members to not be under the mistaken impression that the creation of a new school by combining schools Dewi Sant and Bro Gwaun - but that closing Ysgol Dewi Sant which effectively, will hit the local economy. Why could create less than two school site, and use the opportunity to change the language category 2A school, so that pupils receive a significant part of their education in Welsh? "
Bethan Williams added: "We want to encourage them also to not lose the opportunity to improve the provision is in Tenby, where Welsh primary school will be opened next year and Welsh Pembroke Dock where the unit is full. Welsh secondary provision in Haverfordwest will make very little difference to them.
