On Monday June 24, 2013 Manuel Vega-Arango offered a press conference in which he made public his resignation from the presidency of Real Sporting de Gijon due to wear suffered over recent years, with a penchant for polish and sports results very critical of the work of the board. Given the unquestionable importance of his figure in the historical development of the club, with a lifetime devoted to the institution, his appointment as honorary chairman agreed. However, inasmuch as the statutes of the SAD did not contemplate that possibility and was necessary amendment to formally make that appointment, he would have to wait for the general assembly to be held in December.
Despite having detached from the entity, Vega-Arango Sporting represented in the act of drawing schedule for the Second Division, held on July 9 in the lounge Luis Aragones Soccer City of Las Rozas, as still part of the board of the RFEF and from the club took the opportunity for the president and former ambassador exercised for Atletico Madrid.
More recently, on November 14, his long career prolar in Spanish football was recognized by the LFP (which had been first president prolar in 1983) at a ceremony held in Seville, where he was honored along with six other ex-managers.
